The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has reportedly been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

Details about the arrest remain sketchy, with no official statement yet from the police. However, the development comes just days after Abronye formally applied for political asylum in eight countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Reasons Behind Abronye’s Asylum Request

The outspoken politician said his decision was driven by what he described as “consistent political persecution, direct threats to his life, and systemic abuse of state security powers” under the current government.

According to him, his asylum request was anchored on four key issues:

  1. Threats of unlawful arrest and detention.
  2. Intimidation and harassment.
  3. Targeted political persecution.
  4. Escalating abuse of state security agencies.

Background to His Arrest Claims

Recounting past events, Abronye noted that in February 2025, shortly after the current administration took office, he was the first opposition politician to be arrested and detained by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).

He explained that the 13-hour detention followed his public criticism of what he called the government’s “unfair dismissal” of over 150,000 Ghanaian workers, a move he demanded be reversed.

“During my detention, I was threatened and sternly warned that unless I stopped criticising the government, I would face severe reprisals,” Abronye alleged.

He added that the recent trend of opposition members being detained beyond the constitutionally mandated 48 hours without bail had created “a climate of fear and intimidation” in Ghana’s political space.

Safety Concerns

Abronye insists that both his life and that of his family are in imminent danger, hence his decision to seek international protection under asylum laws.

Neither the NPP leadership nor the Ghana Police Service has released an official statement regarding his reported arrest.
