A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Kwesi Botchway Jnr, has alleged that the arrest of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, is directly connected to his criticism of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

In a Facebook post on Monday, September 8, 2025, Botchway, who is also a private legal practitioner, disclosed that he had spoken with Abronye’s lawyer, who confirmed the arrest but could not confirm his client’s current location.

“I just spoke to Abronye’s lawyer at about 3:20 p.m. He confirmed that Abronye voluntarily reported to the Police CID Headquarters at 10:30 a.m. today. He was interrogated for nearly two hours and later charged with breach of peace and publication of false news,” Botchway stated.

Video of Criticism Allegedly Used as Evidence

According to Botchway, during the questioning, police showed Abronye a video in which he openly criticised the IGP. He claimed that this video formed the basis of the charges against the outspoken NPP regional chairman.

“It is important to add that a video was played where Abronye was seen and heard criticising the Inspector General of Police. This video forms the foundation of the arrest and charges,” he wrote.

Confusion Over Whereabouts

Botchway further revealed that Abronye’s lawyer was informed that his client was being transferred to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB). However, upon arriving at the NIB’s premises, he was told that Abronye had not been brought there.

As of 1:00 p.m., Abronye’s exact whereabouts remained unknown, raising concerns among party members and sympathisers.

Background

This development comes just days after Abronye applied for political asylum in eight countries, including the United States, Côte d’Ivoire, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. He cited political persecution, threats to his life, and abuse of state security powers under the current NDC administration as his reasons.

The Ghana Police Service has not yet issued an official statement on the arrest.
