Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has advised young couples against spending huge sums of money on weddings that could leave them in debt.
Speaking during a sermon, the respected clergyman cautioned men, in particular, to avoid borrowing money just to impress people with extravagant ceremonies. He stressed that weddings should not become financial burdens that haunt couples long after the celebration.
“Most of the foolish things we do are to use our money for unnecessary shows. For weddings, we go and buy expensive white dresses and suits, spending everything we have,” he said.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams explained that many young men who take loans for weddings often face unnecessary pressure when creditors demand repayment.
“You’ve dressed nicely, people came to enjoy your wedding, but you’re in debt. Your phone is ringing every day because someone is chasing you for the money you borrowed. Meanwhile, you can’t even tell your wife you took a loan just to organise a big wedding,” he noted.
The preacher also reflected on his own marriage journey, recalling how he married at a very young age without fully understanding what marriage required.
“I was like a sheep carried to the slaughter. I had no idea what marriage was about. I only did it because I was told I should marry, so I married,” he admitted.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams urged young couples to focus more on building a solid foundation for their marriage rather than wasting money on one-day celebrations.
“So let me say to some of you: when you get it right, don’t throw a big wedding. If your parents want to spend a lot on you, ask them to give you the money to invest in your future instead,” he advised.
He added that couples could sign their marriage documents, receive a blessing, and start their new life without financial burdens.
“Just come to the office, sign the papers, we bless you, you kiss each other, and you go home,” he concluded.
